Watercolor Lilac Blossoms Table

Watercolors..... don't we all love watercolors? This was the inspiration behind my latest piece. One of the troubles I have with my stained artwork is the background. I either have to stain the background behind the image after I am done with the artwork or I use paint. But sometimes, paint can be a stark background. If you look at beautiful floral photography, most of the time the background of the image is out of focus allowing the floral image to stand front and center. This was the inspiration for this lovely table.

I had done a piece for a customer about a year ago and fell in love with the style of the table. Shortly after it was finished, her friend found the exact same style in a little boutique in Pittsburgh.

Of course, I snatched it up, but I have been sitting on it because I couldn't decide what to do with it.

Finally, I saw a picture for inspiration and got to work on the repairing, cleaning, sanding and finally painting! I used a base of Wise Owl Smokey Quartz on the entire piece except on the base, which I used Wise Owl Peppercorn.

Once the 2 coats of each were applied, I use a mix of washes and blended them together until I got the look I wanted. For these washes, I used Wise Owl Black Cherry, Petal, and Black. I also did this wash on the inside of the arcs.

For the very base, I added Wise Owl Black Glaze. I sealed all of the base with Wise Owl Matte Varnish, and then I then got started on my stained artwork of the lilac blossoms. I used MixWax Ebony stain for all of the artwork.

This background was a new technique for me and the final piece did turn out mostly as I had envisioned it. This piece is available for purchase and I have received a lot of great feedback!
